OUR BASEMENT

Beneath the classrooms and singular hall of HSAS lies a realm shrouded in darkness and mystery- the basement. Common Sense explores this lesser known space.

Tucked away from the prying eyes of students and teachers, this labyrinth has long rumored to harbor secrets of the supernatural.

“I’ve always felt a chill in the air whenever I have to go down there,” confesses Mr. Lurato. “It’s like something- or someone- is watching you from the shadows.”

Eric (‘23) affirmed this story. He said, “I’ve always had a sixth sense for these things. I have no doubt in my mind that the basement is haunted. I’ve felt their presence- it’s like a chill running through my bones.”

We sat down with the school custodian Mr. Smith. “I’ve been working here since this school opened, and I’ve heard all the stories,” he remarked, his tone tinged with a hint of amusement. “But in my experience it’s just old pipes creaking and the wind howling through the vents. Nothing more than that.”

Sabrina (‘24) told a different story.

When asked about the basement, she recounted a chilling encounter. “I was in the basement getting tennis balls when I saw it- a shadowy figure ran across the corridor. And then the lights started flickering. At first I thought it was somebody messing with me, but when I looked around there was nobody in sight.”

To get to the bottom of this, the Common Sense team ventured in to the basement of the school. There was no tangible evidence of paranormal activity other than the creaking of the floorboards and flickering lights which could just be due to the aging infrastructure.
