A Historic Season for Senators Girls’ Tennis Team

The High School of American Studies Girls’ tennis team entered the Public Schools Athletic League (PSAL)  division finals with a near perfect record.

The Senators span all grade levels, encompassing a wide variety of skill levels. In fact, their coach Steve Schulman attributes the team’s success to “depth of strength and team cohesion.”

One thing is certain: the Senators’ success is no accident.

The team’s chemistry has been a defining force behind their success.

“We’re like a close-knit family,” says Nari Gioia(‘28). What’s more, their bonds extend beyond the court.

Built through long practices and shared bus rides the players have a collective drive to push one another to be better. “It’s a great community to be in and we build each other up,” notes Esther Zhang(‘26),

Coach Schulman has instilled a solidarity among his players, one that shows in the matches, where their communication and composure often give them the edge in tight moments.

“The credits [sic] should be given to coach,” added Shiloh Fahn(‘28).

Indeed, Coach Schulman has been instrumental in this team’s success. He constantly pushes his mantra, “harder, better, faster, stronger” shares Kareena Mehta(‘29). This is the mindset that each and every player on this team has—one that has guided them to greatness.

The Girls’ tennis Team placed 2nd in their division, falling to the HS of Environmental Studies in the Citywide finals.
